By the end of their residencies, most physicians have gone through 20 plus years of schooling, hundreds of thousands of dollars, and a decade of anticipation for the medical careers that lie ahead. So after all of that time, money, and effort, how does the reality stack up to the expectation? . While each physician’s transition from resident to bona-fide MD is unique, there are some common themes. What follows is advice from several newly minted doctors on how to avoid, or at least be prepared for, some of the many surprises and obstacles they encountered.. The job hunt. While most new physicians leave their residencies eager to use the clinical knowledge they’ve acquired, few residency programs provide information on how to go about finding a job. And a recent survey by Irving, Texas-based recruiting firm Merritt, Hawkins & Associates found that a greater number of residents are receiving fewer offers now than in the past.. Wendy Bohner, an ophthalmologist who completed her residency this year at Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Maryland, says that she and her fellow residents had a harder time than they expected when it came to the job hunt.
