Are Your Employees Stealing You Blind?. It's no fun being paranoid, but too much trust can be expensive. By Bonnie Darves. Jay Davis had no reason to distrust her receptionist. True, the office seemed to have a high number of no shows. But the receptionist had come highly recommended by the same recruiter who put Davis, an obstetrician, into her Bowling Green, Ky., office. And the receptionist had been a "whiz" at her job for five years.. But when the receptionist took a week's vacation one year, a whopping 12 out of 14 scheduled patients failed to show up during her first day off. Davis sat down with a telephone book and a city directory only to discover that the people in her appointment book either had never heard of her or didn't exist at all.. "It became clear to me that the receptionist, when she felt the schedule was too full or had plans that afternoon or didn't want to work when she came back from a day off, was filling my appointment book with non-existent patients," says Davis, who quickly got a new receptionist..
