Move Over Marcus Welby. Women Are Transforming the Image Americans See When We Think About Our Health. . By Sheryl Weinstein. Chris Creatura, a 30-something New York City ob/gyn, loves her career. She especially loves the freedom that being her own boss affords hera perk that may come in the form of spending an extra half hour consoling a patient who recently lost her baby, or giving a five-minute lecture to a workaholic television producer on the hazards of smoking, eating too much fat and not exercising. . A solo practitioner and graduate of Harvard Medical School, Creatura decided two years ago to forgo managed care, a decision she still hasn't come to regret. "I don't want to sound too cocky," the physician says, "but so far I've been lucky to have insured patients who are predominantly working people with some disposable income who appreciate me." . Creatura's optimism reflects a new era in medicineone in which women will play a larger role than ever before. To date, numbers tell the biggest story; in 1994 almost 41 percent of the students enrolled in U.S. medical schools were female. And although for the same year just 32 percent of residents were female, they dominated 60 percent of the spots in pediatrics, and had pushed over the top to make up 53 percent in ob/gyn and 52 percent in dermatology, according ...
