Tips From the Top, Medical Directors Share Their Strategies For More Efficient, and Better, Care

To help those caught in this bind, Physician’s Practice Digest interviewed three medical directors, each operating in a different practice setting, for their advice on strategies that can save money and potentially increase revenues, while creating more uniform standards of care for patients. . Peer-review and benchmarking. Jerry Levine, MD, is the medical director of Maryland Primary Care Physicians (MPCP), a group of nearly 50 doctors, headquartered in Millersville, Md. He says practices need to establish proper monitors like peer chart reviews and benchmarks for quality and productivity. "Have a strategy," Levine says. "These days doctors can’t afford not to know what is going on in any area of their practice.". Before making any changes, he suggests practices step back and evaluate how they stack up to their counterparts in terms of quality and productivity, a process that may necessitate hiring a consultant. "Then, if you find your practice lagging behind, use those as the benchmarkings of what you want to accomplish in your practice," Levine says.
