While oxytocin is known for its classic role in maternal function, evidence suggests that it is also important in modulating the cardiovascular responses to stress and exercise. These studies relied on the use of peptides, peptide antagonists or antisense oligonucleotides (Morris and Michelini). Gene deletion models provide a new means for the investigation of the role of specific receptors or peptides. To explore the role of OT, we performed studies of stress reacticity and baroreflex function in a mice model which lacks the OT gene and protein. Male mice lacking the OT gene (-/-) or their controls (+/+) were prepared with chronic carotid arterial catheters and tested after a minimum 3 day recovery period. Arterial pressure (AP) and heart rate were recorded continuously (1000 Hz sampling).
