When a physician practice merges or is acquired by another healthcare entity, it may assume that it will be business as usual after it signs on the dotted line. But physicians are in for a rude surprise if they fail to take into account beforehand how their computerized datasuch as billing, payroll and codingwill work with their new partner's systems.. Assuming that the transfer will go smoothly is a mistake, says David Friend, MD, managing partner in the Boston office of consulting firm Watson Wyatt Worldwide. "A lot of people don't even think about it, or they assume it will be seamlessplug it in and it works.". In reality, there are a lot of hidden costs to this process. "There can be costs to redo all kinds of thingsthe way you file, the way you keep your medical records, the way you do payroll," Friend says. "They may all be different.".
